JOB TITLE: Support Worker
DEPARTMENT: Nursing
REPORTING TO: Unit Manager
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Director of Nursing

Job Summary

Providing support to a team of nurses and other healthcare professionals who are committed to the delivery of a quality service for patients.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Working with the nursing and multi-disciplinary team to deliver a quality service to patients.
  • Reporting to the nurse in charge any observations/concerns regarding patient(s) presentation.
  • Assisting with the provision of recreational and / or therapeutic activities on an individual and/or group basis.
  • Accurately reporting observations.
  • Promoting patient independence on activities of living and personal choices as far as possible.
  • Responding to patient crises as directed by the nurse in charge.
  • Assisting in ensuring that all clinical documentation/procedures comply with all applicable legislative and statutory requirements.
  • Assisting in the care of patients and carrying out designated tasks under the direction and/or supervision of qualified staff.
  • Where appropriate, supporting relatives and carers and promoting their involvement in care.
  • Understanding and maintaining therapeutic boundaries in staff/patient relationships.

 

Personal

  • Being aware of, and adhering to, policies and procedures within the hospital.
  • Ensuring confidentiality is maintained in the receipt and disclosure of information relating to patients, relatives, careers and/or staff.
  • Being flexible to the needs of the service.
  • Participating and keeping up to date with all identified training sessions/programmes.
  • Assisting in the induction of new staff.

Management

  • Being self aware and seeking advice and guidance when appropriate.
  • Undertaking any other duties at the request of the Team Leader which are commensurate with the role, including project work, internal job rotation and absence cover.
  • Taking on other duties as allocated by the shift co-coordinator /nurse in charge of the shift.

Health and safety

Having regard for the health and safety of yourself and others in the workplace and complying with any safety and statutory regulations.

Fire regulations

Ensuring that you are familiar with all fire regulations and evacuation procedures and adhering to these in the event of an emergency.

General

  • Performing any other comparable tasks requested by the Unit Manager/Team Leader.
  • Encouraging the ethos of the Unit.
  • Achieving and demonstrating agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.
  • The above mentioned duties are neither exclusive nor exhaustive and the post holder may be required to undertake other appropriate duties as required, within the grading of the post and the competence of the post- holder.
  • The job description will be reviewed on an ongoing basis dependent on the needs of the Unit. Any changes will be fully discussed with the post holder before implementation.
